The two areas of activity to be concerned with when creating a vacation home surveillance system are the inside and the outside of the vacation home. The type of selected camera will determine the method used to monitor the inside or outside of a vacation home. Three surveillance options are wireless IP, hardwired system or stand alone cameras.
Wireless IP
A high speed internet connection will provide a live feed to a computer at the location of the main residence. With the proper software installed the cameras observation can be seen from a laptop or the main desk top in your home. A network is created with more than one and up to six wireless IP camera by connecting an ethernet cable from the cameras to an internet connection. A network incorporates indoor and outdoor wireless IP cameras. Wireless IP cameras can be set to record during a specified time or when motion activates the camera. Software is installed on the computers used to monitor the cameras in order to view and have control over the cameras. A portion of the hard drive of the monitoring computer can be designated to record video from the cameras.
Hardwired
A hardwired system connected to the internet transmits a signal to the home computer over the internet then viewed on the desk top or laptop with the proper software. Another option with a hardwired system is to save the internet fee and record the activities to the DVR. The next visit to the vacation home the recorded activities are viewed on a television or a monitor of choice. A DVR can be set to record 100% of the time, a specific time or upon motion activation. When the memory of the DVR is filled it will recycle and new video is placed over previously recorded video. This could be a bad thing when the vacation home is not visited for long periods of time.
When monitoring the exterior of a second home cameras are normally positioned to view openings of the home such as doors and windows to see any unwanted intrusions. Vacation homes are usually used by family and friends. Surveillance cameras will provide security and bring peace of mind to all visitors as well as the owners of the vacation home. Vacation home surveillance recorded to a motion activated digital video recorder saves the monthly internet connection fee.
Stand Alone Surveillance
When there is a specific area to monitor a stand alone surveillance camera with motion activation recording directly to a built in DVR or SD card will provide video of that specific area and activity. The next time the vacation home is visited the captured video can be seen on the television or a monitor of choice. Stand alone cameras are housed in lamps, electronic equipment and just about anything you can think of.
A hardwired system with a DVR connected to the television will provide a real time picture on the television. The recorded video on the DVR can be viewed on the television or another monitor by the occupants of the family get away home.
A high speed cable connection is required when viewing video over the internet from a vacation home surveillance camera.
